Photography In the Field

I’m finally back with a new update. After about 3 weeks on the road making location visits, I’m diving into talking about the photography for this book. We’ll start with the photography in the field:

  • My gear list and file safety plan

  • Challenges I’m facing

  • Plans for bringing the style for the book together

The Recipes

In this episode, we’re moving on to the recipes. These are a few things we’ll cover:

  • The difference between a cook, a chef, and a recipe developer

  • How I generate recipe ideas

  • How one develops recipes differently when they are the one who will style and photograph that food

  • The benefit of photographing your own recipes

Making a Plan

In Episode 2, I’m talking with you about the plan to tackle writing and photographing a seasonal book that includes both stories and recipes. We cover:

  • How doing both the writing and photography yourself is different than how most cookbooks are created.

  • Ways that this book is different than my first two and the challenges that these differences present.

  • My workflow.

  • What deadlines really mean.

I also mention Cookbook Photo Academy in this episode, if you want to read more about that.

How It Came About

Welcome to the first episode of my behind-the-scenes journey creating The California Farm Table Cookbook, set to publish in 2024.

In this introductory recording, I’m talking about how my writing and photographing this book came about. I cover:

  • How this isn’t the first time I was offered this project.

  • How our 7-week road trip across the country in Summer 2022 influenced this new endeavor.

  • Why the timing is right for this project.

  • Where I’m at in the process.

  • What’s to come in future episodes.

Notes:

One minor misspeak on my part around minute 3. I say my manuscript publication deadline is August 1. I mean my manuscript is DUE August 1. Publication for The California Farm Table Cookbook won’t be until 2024.

If you want to see an example of this cookbook series from The Countryman Press, you can check out my friend, Karista Bennett’s book, The Oregon Farm Table Cookbook.

If you haven’t been introduced to my other books, there is Beer Bread and Food on Tap.
